Today, we will be discussing the differences between Public vs Private Cloud Hosting. No doubt! Cloud computing has a lot of benefits to all types of organizations. Let’s first learn what cloud computing is.

What is Cloud Computing?

Cloud computing or Cloud Hosting refers to storing and accessing data over the internet instead of storing it on your local computer’s hard drive. Servers storing all the data and running the program are provided by a cloud service provider. There are two types of cloud hosting, i.e. Public & Private Cloud.

Further, in this blog, we are going to explore Public Vs Private Cloud Hosting.

So, let’s get started!

What is Public Cloud Hosting?

Public Cloud Hosting uses resources from a physical server network and provides virtual machines, applications or storage available to users remotely. It provides an environment which is virtual but fast, flexible and scalable.

The main difference between public cloud hosting and private cloud hosting is that public cloud hosting provides a shared physical server to many clients for hosting. Every virtual network will be isolated and the only intersecting point with the sites will be the physical servers.

Similar to the traditional shared hosting but has different approach for using the physical space. Since, public cloud hosting draws from various physical servers, the space and resources that you are provided with are infinite. You won’t be suffering from any delays in the performance due to any other sites that are sharing the same physical server.

Benefits of Public Cloud Hosting

Public cloud hosting provides an immense amount of benefits. Below are a few of these benefits that will make you want to choose public cloud hosting.

  1. Reliability – When a single server, from a ton of servers, fails or overloads, the user can still draw resources from another server.
  2. Scalability – Resources can be increased to meet workload and user demands.
  3. Elastic Pricing – User only has to pay for the resources that he has consumed.
  4. Performance – Having access to almost infinite resources makes it high performing.

Drawbacks of Public Cloud Hosting

There are certain limitations to any hosting method. A few of them are stated below.

  1. Shared access – The key concept of Public Cloud is “multitenancy”. It means multiple users using the same physical server due to which the chances of data being compromised increase.
  2. Availability – Users have not been able to control fault tolerance because the information of what is being provided and what is not being provided is not revealed. Users have also suffered data  loss due to malicious attacks or issues with vendors.
  3. Virtual target – Virtualization has its own risks as well as those caused by physical machines. Exploits target the server hosts and guests.

What is Private Cloud Hosting?

Private Cloud Hosting provides the same offerings as public cloud hosting. It is exclusively offered to one organization so that an organization can enjoy the benefits without sharing the resources. It provides greater levels of security and control.

There are 2 methods of private cloud hosting, i.e. in-house or internal and hosting by a third party. Most businesses prefer remote hosting by a third party as it is more cost-effective. Internal private cloud is hosted on the grounds of the organization. It is maintained by the organization only. Whereas, a hosted private cloud can be stored on some other place other than the grounds of the organization and be accessed remotely by a third party.

Advantages of Private Cloud Hosting

There are a few advantages of private cloud hosting but you will also be provided with more control and security. A few of the benefits are written below.

  1. Reliability – There are no risks of your site being brought down with a Private Cloud Hosting.
  2. Customization – You can customize your server setup, being the only user, to your desire. Hardware, software, operating system and more can be customized.
  3. Security – Levels of  security are heightened as you will not be sharing the server with anyone.

Disadvantages of Private Cloud Hosting

It can be beneficial for many businesses but not for small businesses or startups. The limitations are stated below.

  1. Cost is higher – Requires hardware and maintenance. Operating system and license for software applications is required.
  2. Maintenance – Set up is expensive and time-consuming. It needs constant support and maintenance.
  3. Under – utilization –  Managing and maximizing utilization is a concern since the cost of under-utilization is a cost to you.

Difference between Public vs Private Cloud Hosting

Public cloud hosting is shared by many users. It provides flexibility to your business. It also provides quick access to applications, data recovery plan. However, there is limited control. Businesses that deal with highly unpredictable traffic can opt for public cloud hosting. Its cost is distributed among the users and you don’t have to pay a lot of money every month.

Private cloud hosting is used by one person and only that person has access to it. Private cloud stores your data on a dedicated server. It has high performance since there is a single user. Its management is limited to business and can customize control or maintenance. Businesses that deal with sensitive information can go for private cloud hosting. Organizations that have a free cash flow to support a high-level server can choose this method of hosting.

Bottom Line

We have provided information regarding the benefits and limitations of both the methods of Cloud Computing, i.e. Public cloud hosting and Private cloud hosting. The user has the choice to decide which one of these suits best.
